Welcome to our Weekly Recap! We want to equip students and parents to live out the Gospel. One way we thought we could do this better is by looking back on what we learned from Sunday and Wednesday. We also want to look ahead to next week’s teaching. This way you can prepare ahead of time and remember what God has taught us.
Last Sunday we looked at “Christmas According To Culture.”We looked at three different aspects of our culture and Christmas: Christmas Trees, Gift-giving, and Santa Claus. We saw that Christmas trees were called Paradise Trees during the Middle Ages. They were to signify Adam and Eve in the garden and how that correlates with the birth of Christ. I love this picture that perfectly paints this thought. Second, we saw how gift-giving correlates with the wise men and how Christ freely gave Himself. Lastly, we looked at Santa Claus and how it originally represented Saint Nicholas who was known for his generosity in the 4th Century. We hope that when we see these icons in our culture we will see the Christmas story in them and not something to be taken granted.
Last Night we discussed “Christmas According To Carols.” We sang and discussed the meaning behind four different Christmas Carol: Joy to the World, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, O Holy Night and Go Tell it On the Mountain. We know that Christmas Carols can often sound mundane and unspiritual but our hope is that during this season we can hear them in a new light. I pray that these will help us reflect on the Christmas story.
This Sunday we will look at “Christmas According To The Old Testament.”As we gaze into the Old Testament Prophecies we get a glimpse of the Messiah to come. Often glimpses can lead us to preconceived notions that aren’t necessarily true. We will see how Israel had some misguided expectations of who the Messiah would be. More importantly, we will look into our own hearts and ways that we have misguided expectations of who Jesus was and is. I encourage you to check out these passages before small groups Sunday!
Next Sunday and Wednesday Evening are our Christmas Parties! The High School Christmas Party is on Sunday Evening from 6-9pm. The Middle School Christmas Party is on Wednesday Evening from 6-9pm. We will provide pizza and ask students with last names A-L bring a side dish and M-Z bring a dessert. We will also have a white elephant gift exchange at both so be sure to bring one! Look forward to seeing you then!
